The National ISDN Enhancements process (NIE) provides a way to add features and capabilities to the NI platform. Enhancement features are included in the NI for a given year (NI-XX) when at least 2 participating switch suppliers have the capability available in first quarter of that year. This enhancement process has been in place since the October 1994 NIUF meeting,
and status updates on the process are provided at subsequent NIUF meetings.

The Service Profile Identifier (SPID) is a number assigned to a fully
initializing ISDN terminal that enables the Stored Program Control
Switching System (SPCS) to uniquely identify the ISDN terminal at layer 3
of the D-channel signaling protocol. The
National ISDN Council has published "SPID Simplification," which is a clear explanation of the assignment of the SPID code.
